UB Rugby Announces 2016 Coaching Staff


UB Rugby is proud to announce their coaching staff for the 2016 competitive season. "The UB Rugby program has grown in both competitiveness and numbers over the past few years and we are fortunate to have such an experienced and qualified team of coaches leading the way’’ said UB Rugby Alumni Association(UBRAA) President Steve Lanzone. ‘’Our team of coaches has the capability of taking the program to the forefront of the USA Rugby D1A competition.’’

Head Coach Mike Hodgins has been at the helm of UB Rugby since 2010 and has taken them to a final 8 appearance in the USA Rugby D1 Championships as well as guided them through the transition to D1A Rugby. He holds a USA Rugby Level 400 coaching certification as well as a World Rugby Level 3 certificate. Hodgins has worked with the USA High School All American program and has also been a selector for the USA U20 team. He served as head coach for the USA Stars & Stripes program and currently is head coach for the RugbyNY West Boys All Star program.

Strength & Conditioning Coach Dr. Dave Hostler is the S & C Coach for UB Men's Rugby. He is a Professor and Chair of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. He has been certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association for more than 20 years as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Development Coach Gerry Wojick – Gerry is an icon of Buffalo Rugby starting his playing career while pursuing a degree in communications at Buffalo State College in the 1970’s. He played for Buffalo Rugby Club for 37 years and is a member of the Buffalo Rugby Hall of Fame.

Backs Coach Ernie Scales – Coach Scales is new to the UB coaching team this year and his experience and knowledge is proving to be invaluable. Ernie is a USAR Level 200 certified coach, was head coach at Niagara University from 2003 until 2012, and is currently an assistant coach for the Kenmore Rugby Club.

Forwards Specialist Ryan Koseski returns for his second year with the UB Bulls. He started his playing career in D1 Rugby at powerhouse Penn State and continued for 17. Coach Ryan was forwards coach at State College High before serving as forwards coach at Penn State for 4 years.
