UB Rugby successfully celebrated its 41st Annual Alumni Weekend May 3-5, 2025 where the UBRAA proudly hosted multiple generations of ruggers for a memorable weekend in the beautiful city of Buffalo.

Coming off a record year of attendance from the 40th anniversary, players both young and old still came out in typical UB Rugby fashion as 120 players participated in the weekend’s festivities including over 70 alumni!

“With it being the new Board’s first Alumni Weekend, we were initially skeptical about attendance but that proved to be no problem. It’s really quite incredible seeing different generations of players trek back to Buffalo each year and we always say this group or that group is really a special unit of guys, but at this point I’ve come to realize every generation is just as tight knit as the one before it and it’s incredible to see how the core principles of loyalty and brotherhood have been passed down across 4 decades of players.”

Kicking off the weekend on Friday afternoon was the 4th annual Senior Brunch to welcome the graduating seniors into the UBRAA. Friday evening was held at Rec Room Buffalo where generations of players came together for a great night of food and drink and the anticipation for the annual Alumni vs. Undergrad game began to build up.

After a dominant performance by the Alumni for the 40th anniversary and a rather late night on the town, the alumni decided to take it easy during Saturday’s game, handing the undergrads their first win in over 3 years. The Ellicott pitch was in her full glory as players found themselves slipping and sliding in the mud after some hard rain earlier in the week, and for many alumni it was their first chance to play under the beautiful goalposts generously donated several years ago by the UBRAA.

Secretary, Viru Patel, generously hosted Saturday evening’s banquet at the M Hotel Buffalo where the ‘03-‘08 teams were inducted into the UBRAA Hall of Fame. This also marked the first year under new leadership of the organization as Board President - Ken Mulvey, fully stepped into his role along with his Vice President - JD Aspland, and Treasurer - Mike Barkachy.

As noted throughout the weekend, every contribution is meaningful and plays a key role in helping our organization continue to grow and enhance the player experience, so we’d like to express our gratitude to all the attendees and donors who made for an unforgettable weekend.
